Is this thing still on?

It's a funny thing. For a band that is likely dead, we sure do seem to put out a lot of music. I believe we've put out more music as a dead band than an active one. We just put out a new one last month, and it's something that was a long time coming. The Concert For Healey Gabison: Live at Union Hall might be the best Oh No album ever made. We were always a better live band than a studio band. But we were also at times a wildly uneven live band. Not so for this show. We're tight, focused, and energetic and the short set list is all bangers. If you like music that makes you want to jump and punch and do wild things with your body beyond your control, that album is for you. I used to go nuts on stage playing this stuff and if we were to somehow do another show, I would also be going nuts on stage again. If you prefer to watch the show versus buying an album, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbqntoDGKfyU7n3_fJcOqI3eoSLsiAjeM

Well maybe I'll bring this old thing blog thing back after all.

God made a man...

I've been into the Nigerian folk and funk lately. This may or may not have any bearing on how I play. I think it means I'm going to be using the wah wah more.

Back at the official Oh No! compound in Greenpoint, we're working on simple songs. Back to basics. Our glorious bass player is back from the High Holy Land and yes, I just called a man with the last name of a type of salty cheese glorious.

Shows? yeah, maybe.

Live at the Apollo

Things i like:
James Brown Live at the Apollo

Things I don't like:
James Brown Live at the Apollo on vinyl (shocker!)

Let me explain this to you baby. James Brown made a top 5 live album of all time. And yes, on vinyl, it sounds amazing. Until you get to the end of side 1. They put the break between sides at the worst possible place, right in the middle of a medley, and it robs the album of its power.

In other news, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 for $2 in great condition! Reason #3421 why I like NYC. Deals abound!

more of the same

things i like:
Hot fun in the Summertime
This American Life

things i don't like:
heat
hot garbage smell

Summertime and the living is just fucking hot. That's all. Not easy, not hard, just hot. People, do you realize we have two new songs maybe? Eric has been exploring the birthplace of our lordandsaviorjesushchristbygawd. And meanwhile, Ben has given us two new songs on stone tablets. One is done-ish and the other, not so much. I'm starting to get that playing itch. There's no fun in not playing shows, heh heh. that's only funny to me and not even so much. ok, you go out and play now. it's summer and that's no time for the internet.

summertime blues

Things I Like:
Sioux City Sarsaparilla
Sixpoints Sweet Action
Sweet Tea

Things I don't like:
consistency

Well, we're in the middle of this hot, humid and sticky season people in New York like to call hell. You may also know it as summer. Yes, summer, that wonderful time of year that we pretend to want in winter, but actually hate when we're in it. And summer brings summer vacation, which is rather unfortunate for a band because that means less shows. Also, less blog updates.

So to recap: Jason went to South Africa for two weeks, met Dikembe Mutombo, drank bonafide Cuban beer and learned to play the vuvuzuela. Also, futbol (yanks call it soccer) is the tops.
Eric Gorgonzola found his way out the high holy land of Israel, where he's in the middle of a three week pilgrimage to see where Jesus lived. Also to visit our friend Funky Punky. From what I've heard from Gordo, Nazareth, of Jesus of Nazareth fame, is a shit hole, so huzzah.
Evan is on his way to Seattle, birthplace of Hendrix and grunge and logging and lumberjacks and Brawny papertowels too, I think.
And Ben, well poor guy is stuck doing grand jury duty, protecting the integrity of this here judicial system, ya hear? so no trips for that one.

July looks lost, but hey, there's August on the way, and there we will be, a full lineup once more. Jerome Scott Umanos has filled in quite ably on our practice sessions.

I'm looking at one day in particular in August, the 21st. Wonder why? Feels like I may have to wrangle an old, once-dead act for that date, though I wonder if the drummer would be up for it.

Anywho, enough riddles and what not. This is for you, Jesse Bryan, since you're our numero uno fano.
